About AFI: Today’s Research Is Tomorrow’s Care
In October 2023, the ADA integrated with the Forsyth Institute to form AFI, a world-class leader in oral health research and innovation. With nearly $30 million in research awards granted in 2024, AFI ranks fourth in the nation and number 1 on the east coast in total funding awarded to dental institutions by the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR).
AFI’s mission is to advance global health, accelerate oral health innovation, and power the profession of dentistry through cutting-edge basic research, creative translational science, innovative clinical techniques, education, and global public health outreach.
From using AI to develop smart restorative materials to harnessing dental stem cells for advanced root canal treatments, AFI is revolutionizing patient care globally. The work being conducted in the lab today will become part of dental practice in the years to come to advance oral and overall health care and the health of patients across the world.
