Chapter 8: Implant Services
Question & Answer #8:
A patient presents with a complete lower denture made 11 months ago at another dental office. She is unhappy with the fit and now realizes she should have had the implants her dentist recommended. The treatment plan consists of two mini implants and two Zest LOCATOR®s on an overdenture. Is there any way to still use her existing denture after we place the implants and locator attachments?
Yes, the existing denture can be used. This is a retrofitting procedure where the internal surface of the existing denture is modified to accommodate the retentive elements. The code is: D5875 modification of removable prosthesis following implant surgery
The attachment assemblies are reported using separate codes.
Surgical implants are coded as D6013 surgical placement of mini implant and the two locators on the overdenture are coded as D5862 precision attachment, by report. A Zest LOCATOR® is just one example of a precision attachment. Any relines are reported separately.
The above code D5862 is the incorrect procedure code in this situation and should not have been part of the answer.

Surgical implants are coded as D6013 surgical placement of mini implant, the locators on the implant posts are coded as D6191 semi-precision abutment – placement, and the keeper assemblies on the implant overdenture are coded as D6192 semi-precision attachment – placement. Any relines are reported separately.
