Dental editors bestow honors
Posted Oct. 28, 2009

By Karen Fox

Honolulu—The editors who chronicle the profession of dentistry were given their due at the 2009 American Association of Dental Editors annual conference Sept. 30-Oct. 1.

Awards of excellence were presented to several noteworthy contributors during the AADE Annual Dental Editors Luncheon, including the William J. Gies Foundation Editorial Awards, sponsored by the American Dental Education Association Foundation:

  • The 2009 American College of Dentists/AADE Prize for Dental Journalism Award went to Dr. Michael Meru, immediate past president of the American Student Dental Association, for "Following Your Moral Compass."
  • 1st place winner of the Gies Award was Dr. Chester Gary, editor of the 8th District Bulletin (New York), for his editorial, "The Contract That Really Matters."
  • 2nd place winner of the Gies Award was Dr. Michael Glick, editor of The Journal of the American Dental Association, for "Bridging Peace: How Health Professionals Can Help."
  • 3rd place winner of the Gies Award was Dr. Roger Alexander, editor of the DCDS Connection (Dallas County Dental Society), for "Driftwood."

The AADE annual conference was designed to help dental editors and managing editors address journalism in a digital age and the ramifications of the economic downturn.

Speakers included Dr. Elliott M. Moskowitz, former editor of the New York State Dental Journal and contributing editor of the Journal of Clinical Orthodontics; Mary Byers, lecturer, author and managing editor of the International Journal of Orthodontics; faculty from the Hawaii Pacific University; and publishers and editors representing the Honolulu Advertiser and Honolulu's UPROAR Magazine, an online publication.
