Society achievement honored in 2009 Golden Apple Awards
Posted Oct. 2, 2009

By Karen Fox

The 21st annual Golden Apple Awards, presented by the ADA to recognize dental society activities and excellence in leadership, were announced in September.

The West Virginia Dental Association won the Golden Apple Award in the category of Legislative Achievement for a constituent society with total membership of fewer than 1,000 dentists for its program, "Building Dental Workforce Infrastructure through Legislative Initiatives." For a constituent society with total membership of more than 1,000 dentists, the Indiana Dental Association won for "Indiana Assignment of Benefit."

For Excellence in Membership Recruitment and Retention Activity in the category of recruitment, the Maryland State Dental Association received top honors for "The Maryland Dental Leadership Roundtable."

For Excellence in Dental Health Promotion to the Public in the component category, the Livingston District Dental Society of Michigan received the award for "Vision, Integrity, Need, Action Dental Clinic." The North Carolina Dental Society received the Golden Apple Award in the constituent society category for "NC Missions of Mercy Public Awareness."

The California Dental Association received the Golden Apple in the category of Excellence in Member-Related Services/Benefits for a dental society with total members more than 1,000 for "CDA Leadership Education Conference and Regional Training."

For Outstanding Achievement in the Promotion of Dental Ethics, the New York State Dental Association won top honors for "Ethics & Jurisprudence for the Dental Practitioner."

The Indiana Dental Association received the Golden Apple Award for Achievement in Dental School/Student Involvement in Organized Dentistry for "Oral Health Policy Forum."

Two societies were recognized in the Golden Apple Award Open Category: the Georgia Dental Association received the constituent award for "GDA 150th Anniversary," and the Nashville Dental Society won the component award for "Interfaith Dental Clinic."

This year, three dental faculty received Golden Apple Awards for Inspiring Careers in Dental Education at the Predoctoral Level. They are Dr. Mark Ochs, associate dean and chair of oral and maxillofacial surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine; Dr. Richard G. Stevenson III, professor of clinical dentistry at the University of California-Los Angeles School of Dentistry; and John A. Molinari, Ph.D., professor and head of biomedical sciences at the University of Detroit-Mercy School of Dentistry.

The announcement of award winners follows three honors that were handed out during the ADA 23rd New Dentist Conference in May. At that event, the ADA presented the New Dentist Leadership Award to Dr. Courtney Alexander of the Texas Dental Association; the Outstanding Leadership in Mentoring Award to Dr. Ethan Glickman of the Middlesex County Dental Society of New Jersey; and the New Dentist Legislative Leadership Award to Dr. Matt Niewald of the Missouri Dental Association.
