Dentistry - A Model Profession

In 1999, the Board of Trustees adopted Resolution B-149-1999 (Trans.1999:804), which directed that a task force be appointed to develop an ADA position paper on the issues of regulatory boards, governance structure, professional authority and continuing competence with a focus on the theme "Dentistry-The Model Profession."

Following appointment of the Task Force, and over the course of several meetings, a draft document was developed, modified with input from the Board of Trustees and subsequently approved by the Board of Trustees in April 2001. At its April 2001 meeting, the Board also recommended that the position paper be distributed to national and state legislators, Association leadership, constituent dental society directors and legislative chairmen.
" Dentistry-The Model Profession" is intended to highlight for state and federal legislators dentistry's accomplishments and demonstrated leadership in addressing such issues as advocacy, access to care, protection of the public, research, professional competency and scopes of practice.
