Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) About Loansome Doc
This page is currently being updated. The following information
may be inaccurate at this time.
What is Loansome
Doc?
Loansome Doc is an online method of ordering
fulltext journal articles after conducting a literature
search using the MEDLINE™
database.
MEDLINE is the National Library of Medicine's searchable
database of over 12 million citations from more than 4,600
medical, dental, health and scientific journals. Launched
by the NLM
in 1971,
MEDLINE contains citations of
dental articles dating back three decades to 1964. Loansome
Doc is available only to users of PubMed and the MEDLINE search
interfaces
offered by the NLM. The system utilizes DOCLINE, NLM's automated
interlibrary loan request
and referral system. Loansome Doc is offered only by specific
libraries, including the ADA Library.
From the MEDLINE/PubMed
Web site, a user can
order articles from a list of retrieved citations. The
Loansome Doc requests are downloaded by the ADA Library staff
by the next working day. The requested articles will be
processed and sent either by mail or fax, according to the
member's profile. Note: The ADA Library does not currently
deliver articles in electronic format.
If the ADA Library cannot supply an article,
the request will be cancelled, unless the member authorizes
us (or the NLM Loansome Doc profile) to obtain articles
from another library. In that case, another library will
supply the article directly, usually for a fee of $11-$12.
Twenty-four hours after the request is made, the member
can
request a status report from the Loansome Doc area.

Can
non ADA members use Loansome Doc?
The ADA Library provides Loansome Doc
service to ADA members only. However, non ADA members
may sign up for Loansome Doc services from another library
through the
National Library of Medicine's Web site.

What will it cost
me?
The usual ADA Library photocopying fees plus
a surcharge for faxing, if you choose that option. If your
order is referred to another library, that library's fees
apply. (See Other
Libraries for information on how this option may affect
costs.)
Service Fee
There is no charge from either NLM or ADA
for transmitting a batch of requests through Loansome Doc.
Document Fees–ADA Library
The charge for Loansome Doc articles supplied by the ADA
Library are the Library's usual photocopying
fees . Member
fees
are $1
service fee per article plus $.25 per page. There
is a $5
minimum per order. However, a member may request up
to one article per week of 5pp. or less without charge (regular
shipping only). Faxing involves surcharges.
Document Fees–Other
Libraries
The fees for Loansome Doc articles supplied
by other libraries vary. Most participating libraries charge
their current interlibrary loan fees which average $11-$12
per article regardless of length. This is only applicable if
the user chooses "yes" to the "Authorize" option on
NLM's Loansome Doc registration
form or on a document order
form. The member will receive the documents directly from
the supplying library, but be billed by the ADA Library.
Important: If the "Authorize" option
is chosen, the member will be held responsible for any
and all fees charged by the supplying
library. The ADA Library has no power to waive or reduce these
charges nor can it predict the response time of other
libraries. All fees incurred must be paid for the member to
remain in good standing for future service.

If the ADA
doesn't have the journal, is my request automatically referred
to another library?
No. It is forwarded only if you have
selected the "yes" to the "Authorize" option.
(See Document Fees–Other Libraries.)

How do I register
to use Loansome Doc?
The Loansome Doc registration process is
described in detail below. For basic, stepbystep
instructions on completing the registration process, see MEDLINE/Loansome
Doc for ADA Members .
To register for the Loansome Doc service,
ADA members must establish a Service
Agreement with the ADA Library the ADA Library is then
known as the member's "Ordering Library." By
entering into the Service Agreement, the member acknowledges
that he or she is aware of copyright restrictions and the fees
charged by the ADA Library.
Members who enter into a Service Agreement
with the ADA Library to use Loansome Doc will be given the
library's unique identification number, called a LIBID, which
the member will need to provide when he or she registers to
use Loansome Doc for the first time. Thereafter, this number
will be transmitted automatically with each article request so
that the request is sent to the ADA Library for fulfillment.
The NLM's
Loansome Doc Registration page stores the user's complete name,
address, telephone number, fax number, e-mail address, and
delivery method (mail or fax), as well as the ADA's LIBID
number.
Each user also has the option to have a
request routed to another library if the ADA Library cannot
fill it. This option is located on the Loansome Doc
Registration page and can be changed for each individual order
by answering "Yes" or "No" to the
question, "Authorize?" Answering
"Yes" to this option usually involves additional
fees. Other libraries typically charge $11-$12 per Loansome
Doc article.

What journals can
the ADA Library supply?
The ADA Library receives over 600 journals,
including all dental titles that are indexed in MEDLINE. See Dental
Journals for a complete listing.

When
should I choose the "Authorize" option?
We should be able to supply the majority of
your needs from our dental journal collection. However, some
MEDLINE articles concerning oral health are from journals in
medicine, nursing, or behavioral studies. Few of these will be
held by the ADA Library. If your subject appears primarily in
these journals, and you are willing to pay higher fees, you
may want to consider the "Forward Request" option.
(See Other
Libraries for information on how this option may affect
costs.)

Is Loansome Doc
available from other libraries?
Yes. You may contact your NLM regional
office at 800-338-7657 for a list of libraries in your
area that provide Loansome Doc service. Then you must decide
which
library best meets your needs and set up a service agreement
with that library. However, unless you are already affiliated
with that library, their charges may be higher than those
available to you as a member from the ADA Library. (See Other
Libraries for information on how this option may affect
costs.)

faster than other ordering options?
The processing time by the ADA Library is
the same as for orders received by other means. However, the
ordering process can be much faster for the member since
he/she can just click and send a request, rather than
re-typing or copying it into our online order form or printing
it out and faxing it to the Library.

What's the
average wait to receive an order?
Most orders will be processed and mailed in
three working days. With an additional 2-4 days for mail,
you may expect to receive articles within 5-7 days.

How can I get a
status report on my order?

orders daily. The PubMed user may
request a status of Loansome Doc orders. Twenty-four hours
after an order is sent, a user may expect to find it in the
Status of Orders file. Note: Requests are processed only
during regular Library hours, Monday-Thursday, 8:30am-5pm,
Central Time.

How many articles
I can order?
The ADA Library's usual limit of 15 articles
per week per patron applies.
If a member sends a request for fax delivery
of more than 20 pages, the first few articles up to
20 pages will be faxed for a surcharge. (See Services
and Fees for Members for
more information.) Any remaining articles will be sent regular
mail or UPS.

What if I want
to talk to a real person?
The ADA Library staff is still here, working
for our members. We haven't been replaced by computers. We
still welcome phone calls from our members. However, we only
take up to three article requests by phone. Anything longer,
we ask that you fax or mail it to us. (See Contacting
the Library.)
