OVERVIEW OF OTHER LEGAL CASES FILED

The ADA and Aetna entered into a proposed settlement agreement in connection with the ADA's lawsuit against Aetna. Read more.

The ADA and two of its member dentists sued Aetna on August 15, 2001, charging the giant insurer with breach of contract, libel and unlawful interference with the dentist-patient relationship. Filed in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, the class-action complaint sought relief under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) for breach of contract, and under supporting state laws for the trade libel and tortuous interference charges.

On March 6, 2002 the ADA sued one of the nation's largest health care companies, WellPoint Health Networks Inc., and its wholly owned subsidiary, Blue Cross of California, charging the health care conglomerate with breach of contract, unlawfully interfering with the dentist-patient relationship and trade libel. And on May 14, 2002 the ADA filed suit against a Los Angeles attorney, charging the lawyer with targeting the nonprofit association with an orchestrated "campaign of lies and distortion" to promote himself and his law firm. The complaint arises out of attempts by the lawyer, Shawn Khorrami, to promote himself and his firm through false and defamatory statements printed in press releases and on the Internet. The complaint seeks compensatory damages for harm suffered by the ADA and punitive damages to deter further wrongful conduct against the ADA.
