ADA New Dentist Committee Awards

Denver—Dentists and new dentist committees were honored July 20 at the 11th Annual New Dentist Committee Awards Luncheon.

Winners were selected based on a demonstrated commitment to new dentists and dental students through their enthusiasm, volunteerism and dedication to the future of the profession. The 2013 awards and winners include:

Golden Apple Award for New Dentist Leadership: Dr. David White

Dr. White couldn't attend the awards ceremony but Kevin Goles, a student he mentored, accepted on his behalf. Dr. White is an adjunct professor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas School of Medicine and at the University of Nevada, Reno, where he is the director of the Pre-Dental Society. He is also chair of the Nevada Dental Association New Dentist Committee and co-created a program at the university that admits high school students directly into dental school. Dr. White was asked by the superintendent of schools in Nevada to continue coaching and mentoring students throughout the state and was appointed by the Nevada governor as the chair of the Nevada Commission on Education Technology. He's chair of the Nevada Political Action Committee and the NVDA's annual Give Kids A Smile event, which is solely manned by new dentists and pre-dental students.

Golden Apple Award for Outstanding Leadership in Mentoring: Dr. Daniel Edwards

Mr. Goles, now a student at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, was on hand to see Dr. Edwards, his new mentor, receive his award. Dr. Edwards is an adjunct clinical lecturer in restorative sciences for the department of cariology, restorative sciences and endodontics at the university and the lead faculty advisor for the American Student Dental Association and the Delta Sigma Delta Dental fraternity there. He's developed programs for dental students and serves as a mentor for new dentists and dental students.

New Dentist Committee Outstanding Program Award of Excellence: Arizona Dental Association Subcommittee on the New Dentist

The subcommittee created a dentistry business mastership series titled "To Help Each Other Succeed. The 10-session program is geared toward Arizona member dentists who have been practicing less than 10 years and provides them with the necessary information to succeed in practice management. New dentists interact with established practitioners, who act as mentors and resources.

Outstanding New Dentist Committee: Oklahoma Dental Association New Dentist Committee

Since 2008, the ODA New Dentist Committee has hosted a New Dentist Seminar that offers seven hours of continuing education and provides new dentists with camaraderie. Dental students attending a graduate program are also encouraged to attend to expand their knowledge and network with new dentists and recent graduates.
