San Francisco—Amber, the patient, lay in a dental chair on stage as her dentist, Dr. Gordon Christensen, meandered through the crowd.

“Amber, you make sure you tell us if you’re getting uncomfortable,” Dr. Christensen said. “You would be home right now if this was for real.”
It was for real. But it was also a show and an educational experience.
Nearly 600 people crowded a ballroom at the Moscone Center Oct. 18 to watch Dr. Christensen, one of dentistry’s most popular lecturers, kick off the 2012 Education in the Round lineup with Class II Resins Can be Simple and Fast. Dr. Christensen and two assistants treated Amber, who was on a stage in the front of the room as a camera shot close-up video of the procedure, which was displayed on flat-screen TVs around the room.
Dr. Christensen talked through the techniques he used, recommended his favorite products and brands and gave tips to the dentists in the audience, who seemed mesmerized by the presentation.
The ADA’s Education in the Round courses allow participants to experience live-patient procedures in a fully functional dental operatory.
Other courses in the 2012 EIR lineup included:
- Soft-Tissue Surgery for Augmentation of Keratinized Gingiva, by Jon B. Suzuki;
- User-Friendly Techniques for Automatic Atraumatic Extraction of Teeth and Socket Grafting, by Dr. Lee H. Silverstein;
- Examination, Diagnosis and Treatment of the Restorative-TMD Patient, by Dr. James McKee;
- Lasers in the Dental Practice—A Live-Patient Demonstration, by Drs. Charles Hoopingarner, David Roshkind and Donald Coluzzi.
