Courses, open house for aspiring leaders at Annual Session

Las Vegas—The 2011 ADA Annual Session will include a full day of free events designed for dentists and their spouses who aspire to hold leadership roles in their dental practices and as volunteers in organized dentistry.

With the goal of connecting aspiring and experienced volunteer leaders, Leadership Day at Annual Session includes two continuing education courses and an open house on Tuesday, Oct. 11. New and experienced leaders are welcome.

The first course will be Pathways to Leadership: The “XX” Factor, presented by Drs. Linda Niessen, Evis Babo and Yolanda Bonta (course 6305, Oct. 11, 8-10:30 a.m.).

Speakers share data and lessons learned from clinical practice, the dental industry and organized dentistry to address women dentists’ leadership and career pathways. Dr. Babo will start the day by using information from the ADA’s vast database of dentist surveys to identify the myths that have been targeted toward women dentists; Dr. Niessen will address lessons learned about women’s leadership from business literature, outlining strategies for developing a unique career path; and Dr. Bonta will close the session by sharing steps on how to be your own brand.

Between the two courses, anyone can attend the Networking Open House (10:30-11:30 a.m.). This networking power hour is dedicated to exploring how to become involved, or more involved, in organized dentistry. It’s hosted by volunteer leaders from organizations such as the Alliance of the ADA, American Association of Women Dentists, ADA, Hispanic Dental Association, Indian Dental Association (USA), National Dental Association and Society of American Indian Dentists. (Course participation is not required to attend the open house.)

The second course is Leadership For Tomorrow—In Today’s Changing World presented by Drs. Terry Dickinson, Irvin Kaw and Evis Babo (course 6321, 2:15-4:45 p.m.). Attendees will learn about themselves as leaders and the importance of adaptive leadership. The course also explores the latest trends affecting leaders and the decisions they make.

This event is made possible due to CareCredit’s educational support and was developed in partnership with the ADA Department of Dental Society Services and the Council on ADA Sessions.
