Helping Children Through Give Kids A Smile

The American Dental Association began the Give Kids A Smile program in 2003 as a way for ADA members to join with others in the community to provide dental services to underserved children. The program initially began as a one-day event in February, but has since grown to local and national events year-round. Dentists and other team members volunteer their time, and services, to provide screenings, treatments and education to children throughout the United States. Each year, approximately 450,000 children benefit from more than 1500 events, all because of the efforts of 40,000 or more  annual volunteers.

2013 Give Kids A Smile Day National Kickoff Event

Celebrating its 11th year, the ADA was scheduled to hold its national kick-off event in Louisville, Kentucky on Friday, February 1, 2013 at the Smile Kentucky! program. Nearly 300 underserved children from area schools were scheduled to receive comprehensive free oral health care from 40 dentists, 200 dental students and 100 other community members at the University of Louisville School of Dentistry, but due to a winter storm the event had to be postponed.  This has never happened in Smile Kentucky’s 10 year history.  Organizers quickly regrouped and rescheduled all of the children for treatment of future days.  On January 31, ADA President, Dr. Robert Faiella attended a reception at Louisville’s Muhammad Ali Center to highlight the continued success of Smile Kentucky!  In the past decade, Smile Kentucky! volunteers have provided 130,000 elementary school children in 12 counties with dental education; 39,000 with dental screenings at school; and 3,000 children have received free treatment valued at more than $1 million.
