CODA Survey of Advanced Dental Education
Survey of accredited advanced dental education programs, including advanced education in general dentistry (AEGD), general practice residency (GPR), dental anesthesiology, orofacial pain, oral medicine, dental public health (DPH), endodontics, oral and maxillofacial pathology, oral and maxillofacial radiology, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics, and prosthodontics.
Features data on program directors; student enrollment and graduates by gender, race/ethnicity, and program type; tuition and stipends; instruction methods; international dental school graduates; off-campus training; and non-accredited programs offered by dental schools.

During the 2023-24 academic year, there were 27,004 students enrolled in predoctoral dental education programs, up from 26,596 the prior year. The class of 2023 had 6,869 graduates, up from 6,745 in 2022.

Predoctoral dental education dashboard in Tableau
In 2023-24, 56.7% of all enrolled dental students in predoctoral programs were female, and 54.5% of graduates of the class of 2023 were female. In comparison, the percentage of graduates who were female was 47.2% in 2013, 39.5% in 2003, 35.3% in 1993, and 21.3% in 1985.

Total predoctoral enrollment is currently at its highest level historically, with 26,596 students enrolled in the 2022-23 academic year compared to 21,994 in 2012-13.

In 2022-23, the average first-year cost of dental school (including tuition and mandatory general fees) was $42,821 for residents and $71,152 for non-residents in public programs. Also in 2022-23, the average resident first-year cost of private dental school programs was $80,869.

In 2022-23, 799 graduates of international dental schools were admitted to U.S. dental schools with advanced standing, up from 704 the previous year.
In 2022-23, non-resident aliens made up 3.9% of first-year students and 5.2% of graduates.
