Give Kids a Smile

In its sesquicentennial year, the ADA's seventh annual Give Kids A Smile program provided free oral health services to some 465,800 underserved children across the country. More than 45,700 dental professionals, including 12,500 dentists, participated in Give Kids A Smile! 2009, volunteering through 1,700 local GKAS programs, many of them operating at multiple sites.

The majority of children were seen Feb. 6, but in some areas, services were scheduled on subsequent days and have continued as needed. The benefits of GKAS continue all year through expanded, ongoing programs nationwide. New this year is a public service announcement featuring National League Baseball's MVP Albert Pujols of the St. Louis Cardinals.

Ready Set Brush Donation

ADA staff annually raise money for a worthwhile local dental-related charity during the year-end holidays. This year, the theme was changed to coincide with the ADA's 150th anniversary, and the proceeds from the 2008 ADA Sesquicentennial Raffle and a matching grant from the ADA Foundation were used to purchase 3,000 Sesame Street oral care storybooks, "Ready, Set, Brush!"

The books are being distributed to selected public schools and public libraries in Chicago, in Gaithersburg/Quincy and in the Washington, D.C. area. Toothbrushes and floss donated by Sunstar Americas are also being distributed to the pre-k, kindergarten and first-grade students at schools visited by ADA staff.
